Wild West Wagyu has embarked on this R&D project to address the challenges and inefficiencies in traditional breeding and rearing methods for Fullblood Wagyu (Bos taurus).The program aims to further conventional and advanced breeding techniques to improve outcomes in herd quality and operational efficiency.
Conventional breeding techniques have limited genetic predictability, inconsistent reproductive outcomes, take multiple years to validate genetics, and lack the backing of proper scientific validation. Similarly, conventional rearing techniques require specialised labour, extensive physical handling and only use limited data inputs (e.g., weight). In combination, these limitations lead to operational inefficiencies, suboptimal herd quality and poor reproductive and genetic outcomes for Wagyu. To rectify these limitations, Wild West Wagyu will undertake experimental activities to develop processes and technologies to enable the rapid intergenerational inheritance of preferable Wagyu genes.
It is believed these processes could be capable of proving Wagyu genetics from a single generation, as opposed to the current process requiring multiple generations of breeding to “prove” animals.
